We are very excited to hear that Brainerd is going to upgrade and therefore prosper the shopping mall area. This will not only beautify the city but will aid in the continuance of our city to flourish.
The thought of putting a school in that area is utterly ridiculous. There is more than enough real estate around Brainerd that would make better school sites than in our main shopping area.
MnDOT wants to construct a G.P.S. tower in McKinley Township, so on Jan. 17, 2001, they held a meeting in Byron Township (15 miles south of the affected community) to hear what the taxpayers of this area thought of their idea. About 75 people came and voiced their opinion -- approximately 75 to nothing against said construction. We thought the democratic system was still working. Apparently not when you are dealing with an anarchy.
Now on Feb. 28, 2001, MnDOT held a meeting, open to the public, although we were not notified, and informed us that they had already made up their mind at the time of their Jan. 17 peasant pacification project. They blew hundreds of our tax dollars and wasted our time when the outcome of the meeting was a forgone conclusion. If we hadn't shown up they could have said it was lack of public interest. Now they say this is the only feasible location. If this is true why have they wasted our tax money studying other locations? Me thinks they speak with forked tongue.
Outside of the questionable local politics the thing that bothers me the most is they led us to believe we actually had a choice. We didn't. They made themselves a chart and it doesn't include the locals' wishes or welfare.
If our overseas government agencies operate with the same heavy handed lack of diplomacy I can readily see why the United States is fast becoming one of the most hated countries in the world. Thank you.
