COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- An attorney for former Ohio State football coach John Cooper is investigating whether Cooper's recent dismissal is connected to a current university inquiry into his travel expenses.
"We're still trying to figure out if there's a connection between the two," Cooper's attorney, Bill Meeks, said Tuesday night. "We think there may be."
Meeks' comments came after Ohio State made public that the university, along with the Franklin County prosecutor's office, were investigating possible misspending on travel expense forms Cooper submitted before he was fired Jan. 2.
The spark for the investigation was a reimbursement sought by Cooper for a meal for him and a guest or guests during December, sources told The Columbus Dispatch for a story Wednesday. That caused the university to question other reimbursement requests stretching over four years, reported the newspaper, which did not identify its sources.
"I can confirm that we have been reviewing (Cooper's) more recent expense reports," Lee Tashjian, vice president of university relations, said Tuesday night.
Tashjian declined to specify the amount of money involved, but said the matter was turned over to Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien because it was more than $500.
