Radke turns in strong showing
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Twins manager Tom Kelly was pleased with the effort of staff ace Brad Radke, who ignored trade rumors and pitched three solid innings in Minnesota's 4-1 win over Tampa Bay.
''I thought (Radke) threw terrific and did a real nice job,'' Kelly said after Monday's game. ''You could see the professionalism and the maturity, and he didn't let it bother him that he was putting the ball in some great spots and wasn't getting any calls.''
Radke, who was unable to come to terms on a new contract before a self-imposed Feb. 20 deadline, allowed one run on three hits to a Devil Rays lineup that played without sluggers Jose Canseco, Vinny Castilla and Greg Vaughn, who did not make the trip.
Radke surrendered a walk, two hits and a run in the top of the first.
''I think I need to have somebody throw the first inning for me,'' he said. ''I'm averaging about 30 pitches in the first, but other than that I thought I threw the ball well.''
Devil Rays first baseman Steve Cox drove in second baseman Tony Graffanino with a one-out single to right to account for Tampa Bay's only run in the first inning. Radke struck out Jose Guillen swinging and then catcher Marcus Jensen threw out Herbert Perry at third on an attempted stolen base to end the inning.
Twins second baseman Todd Walker went 2-for-3 with a single, a double and a run scored and Brian Richardson hit a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth to provide the final margin.
Right-handed reliever Bob Wells (1-0) earned the win in front of 3,507 fans, while Devil Rays right-hander John Burkett (0-1) took the loss.
The Twins travel to Tampa today to face the world champion New York Yankees in a 6:15 p.m. CST start. Left-hander Eric Milton will start for Minnesota against New York right-hander Jake Westbrook.
Minnesota would also like to extend Milton's contract. The 24-year-old emerged last season as a reliable starter. ''If they can give me what I want, I'd sign in a second,'' he said Monday. ''But they're not even close.''
Twins general manager Terry Ryan said he might make another effort during the season to sign Milton to a long-term deal.
Radke, a native of Tampa who lives in Largo, said he would enjoy the opportunity to play in his hometown again but is committed to the Twins right now.
''I'm just trying to go about my business, have some fun and win some games,'' Radke said. ''When the time comes, if they trade me to Tampa, then so be it. Until then I'll just keep doing my job.''
Ryan said there have been no talks between Radke's agent, Ron Simon, and the club since training camp began, and any talk about Radke being traded anywhere is speculation at this point.
''I'm probably 100 percent sure I'll still be with the Twins on opening day,'' Radke said. ''But it changes every day. Last week I wasn't sure, but I don't see why I won't be around on opening day.''
Radke rejected a three-year contract worth $21 million last month because he and his agent want a trade clause after the first year of the new deal.
