Brainerd fans see basketball great. Karvonen debuts. Karvonen who has been invited to try out for the 1980 U.S. Olympic team scored 22 points but was on the sidelines early in the second half. Karvonen displayed her shooting form that has helped her score 2,948 points -- the most any Minnesota high schoolers, girl or boy, has ever totaled.

The campaign to raise $500,000 in pledges of credit by Thursday has reached the halfway mark today, according to Mayor George Bedard who is heading the drive.
40 years ago (1960)
The airport weather reported -26 overnight. Bemidji also reported -26 and the claim of the coldest spot in the state.

-- George Starrell left for Minneapolis this morning to spend the day transacting business.
-- Mrs. Leonard Boeder and son Duke, left Sunday to join Mr. Boeder, who is now managing the B. and L. Diner at Staples.
80 years ago (1920)
Teachers' salaries have been raised $10 a month by the Board of Education. The raise to date from the first of the year. For substitute teachers the increase will amount to about 50 a day.
100 years ago (1900)
The surprise party at the camp Saturday night was not very well attended on account of the cold, but the children who were there enjoyed themselves with games, etc., while the cook made them twice glad with some of his fine cakes.
