The mother of a 5-year-old boy is in custody following a case of alleged child abuse in northeast Brainerd, the Brainerd Police Department reported.
About 8:55 p.m. Wednesday Brainerd officers responded to the residence after a neighbor reported a child came to the door in distress and obviously had been injured.
The child wandered to the neighbor's home after he was assaulted and kicked out of the house, police said. The child suffered bite wounds to his arms and face, police said. He was treated at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd and released.
The mother, Cody Lee Larson, was arrested at her home and faces criminal charges of third-degree assault and malicious punishment of a child. Formal charges are expected from the Crow Wing County attorney's office on Friday.
The 5-year-old and a 3-year-old sibling, were placed in police protective custody.
Brainerd Police Chief John Bolduc praised the decisive action of the neighbors who immediately called police when they realized what happened.
"They did the right thing in taking the child in and notifying officers," he said in a news release.
