Brainerd's Lance Hoff won two individual titles and teammate Mark Schmitz one at the Section 8 swim meet. Hoff paced the 200 free in a school record 1:47.97, the 100 backstroke in 55.99 and Schmitz the 100 free in 48.78, to advance to the state meet.

Despite strong objections from Alderman Mary Koep, salary increases of 17 percent over the next two years for city department heads and supervisors were approved by the city council. There were heated words and charges thrown across the table before the vote.

The Ironton Ranger, a weekly newspaper published at Ironton, has been purchased by George Sempel and Joe Melby, who will take over management and editing next Monday. Both men have been employees of the Brainerd Dispatch.

City employees on full time will not be permitted to engage in any work outside their duties, the city council ruled at last night's meeting. The rule followed a complaint that one of the truck drivers in a Brainerd department had taken outside work.
100 years ago (1910)
Dr. R. A. Beise states that the typhoid fever situation in Brainerd is about 65 cases in total, some of which were secondary infections within families. The situation is hopeful that the current thaw will raise river levels and flush out the Mississippi.
