Most of the Child In Need columns in recent months have featured the need for male mentors to be partnered with the long list of boys we have on our waiting list. However, for the first time in many months, girls now outnumber boys on our waiting list. Our son just finished his 2nd year as a Brainerd Squirt hockey player. He was lucky to have both Matt Reid and Terry Dolan as coaches, and we would like to thank them for all their hard work and all that they taught him. Because of their role-modeling, instruction and expectations, he has learned how to set personal goals and work hard to achieve them as well as be a member of a team. He learned how to win with sportsmanship and handle the disappointment that comes with losing. Most importantly, he learned to be responsible and mindful that when he is playing in another city he represents Brainerd.

Roger Pickar, age 68, resident of Brainerd, passed away suddenly at his home on Thursday, March 1, 2007. Roger was born in Brainerd, the son of Clarence (Blackie) and Edna Pickar. He lived most of his life in the Brainerd lakes area. Roger graduated from Washington High School in 1956. Roger was a member of Millwright Union Local No. 05348, F.O.E. Aerie No. 207 and Moose Lodge No. 1246. He worked as construction manager on several projects for Kraft Foods in Melrose and Albany, Minn.

At times, the Minnesota Legislature moves at a snail-like pace. Other times we wish someone would slam on the brakes - at least long enough for lawmakers to actually read and think about what they're passing.
Open Forum: Brainerd-made quilts sent to military hospitals
In 2006 the Brainerd area Quilts of Valor sent 213 quilts to military hospitals. These quilts are given to wounded soldiers injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Army reshuffling is cosmetic
Thursday The Post reported that Lt. Gen. Kevin Kiley heard years ago from a veterans advocate and even a member of Congress that outpatient care at Walter Reed Army Medical Center was distressingly squalid and disorganized. That commander proceeded to do little, even though he lives across the street from the outpatient facilities in a spacious Georgian house. Also Thursday, the Army announced that Maj. Gen. George Weightman, the head of Walter Reed since August, had been relieved of his command. His temporary replacement? None other than Kiley.
