STAPLES -- The second seeded Staples-Motley Cardinals held off No. 7 Royalton 46-44 behind Derek Peterson's 12 points in the quarterfinals of the Subsection 19, Section 6, Class 2A playoffs Thursday.

The win gives Cardinals coach Lynn Peterson his 599th career victory. He will go for No. 600 Saturday against Albany.
