S-M girls advance to section semifinals

HAWLEY -- The Staples-Motley Cardinals girls' basketball team defeated the Perham Yellowjackets 57-41 in the Section 8, Class 2A quarterfinals Saturday.

"They had beaten us earlier, but we took them out of their game with our defense," said Cardinals coach Ron Beachy.

Laura Warn led the Cardinals with 20 points and seven assists. Michelle Honek added 14 points and six steals.

HIBBING -- The top-seeded Greenway Raiders had only three players score but still defeated the No. 4 Crosby-Ironton Rangers 39-34 in the Section 7, Class 2A quarterfinals Saturday.

Erika Ogard led the Rangers with 16 points. C-I finished the season 9-19.

PARK RAPIDS -- The second-seeded Laporte Wildcats overcame a slow start and went on to post a 54-31 triumph over the No. 6 Verndale Pirates in the East Subsection 6, Class 1A semifinals Saturday.

Kayla White paced the Pirates with 13 points.
