Wadena-DC loses in 2A consolation championship dual

ST. PAUL -- With one of their best wrestlers out of the lineup with a knee injury, the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines needed to make up some points.

The attempt cost them as WDC dropped a 36-21 decision to the Windom/Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin Cobras in the state Class 2A team consolation final Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center.

With 125-pounder Logan Brincefield injured and out of the lineup, the Wolverines needed to shuffle their roster and pick up a win or two somewhere else, preferably by pin. Instead, the Cobras took advantage of WDC's desperation.

"I think some of the other kids pressed a little bit and it cost us," WDC coach Dennis Kaatz said. "We had one guy press for a pin and he ended up getting pinned. We were just trying to make up for those points and ended up trying too hard."

Leland Brincefield recorded WDC's first win at 125 when he scored a technical fall at the final whistle. It was the Wolverines only win through the first seven weight classes.

WDC's Peter Hayes recorded a major decision at 145 before Zach Snyder and David Uselman picked up pins at 171 and heavyweight.

The Wolverines end their season 18-3. WDC won the consolation championship for two years prior to this trip to state.

"We had a good season," Kaatz said. "We lost three matches all year. That's a good season."
