ST. PAUL -- The second-ranked BOLD Warriors had the misfortune of drawing eventual co-state champion Frazee in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A team wrestling tournament.
On Saturday, the Warriors took out some of their frustration on eighth-ranked Pierz as they defeated the Pioneers 36-15 for the consolation championship at the Xcel Energy Center.
Pierz coach Mark Jensen thought BOLD justified its ranking as one of the state's top teams.
"We stayed with them for a while," Jensen said. "Then they got us in the middle. They kind of ran us through there.
"We needed to start winning on top. We ended up a little short there. We stayed with them down below. We did what we had to do. We wrestled pretty smart down there.
"I think they knew they were in a match, even though the score might not have indicated it."
The Pioneers won only three matches. Nathan Janson opened the dual with a fall. Craig Luberts scored a decision at 135 and Dan Britz added a fall at 171 to round out Pierz's scoring.
Jensen said to be in contention to place is the position every team wants to be in.
"To go two and out is a real letdown," he said. "If we would have had a different draw, maybe we could have made it to the third-place round. The first-round draw is so important, as far as who you get. We drew Medford. They ended up being co-state champions, and we made a pretty good run at them.
"It was a good tournament, all in all, for us. I'm proud of our kids and what they have accomplished."
Pierz, which finishes 26-5, appears to have an opportunity to return to state next season.
"We graduate five seniors," Jensen said. "I think we've pretty well got them covered with kids coming back. The future looks bright.
"We don't wrestle a senior until 152, so mainly we're eighth-, ninth- and 10th-graders all the way through there. This is pretty exiting for them."
