New regulations took effect Wednesday at the start of the fishing calendar year, which runs through Feb. 28, 2001. Other changes may take effect in the coming months and anglers are advised to check for any new or special regulations on the waters they fish.
On Mille Lacs all northern pike between 26-36 inches must be immediately returned to the water and an individual angler can have no more than one pike over 36 inches in possession. Additional restrictions or changes to the walleye harvest and length limits may be in effect and will be posted at public access sites. A minimum size limit for smallmouth bass is also being considered.
On Lake Winnibigoshish a walleye slot limit may be implemented.
Bag and possession limits on yellow perch may be reduced.
New restrictions on tournament angling may be implemented.
Beginning Wednesday the DNR is issuing all licenses through its new electronic licensing system. The new system assures that agents will always have an adequate supply of all license types on hand.
Dates to remember:
May 13 -- walleye and northern pike opener
June 3 -- muskie opener
May 27 -- bass opener
