20 years ago (1990)

Brainerd never was a metropolis where citizens could whistle for taxis from street corners, but since before Christmas residents can't even phone for one. Brainerd Taxi Cab shut down for economic reasons and there is no new service to take its place.

30 years ago (1980)

The winner of the "Bizarre Theft" of the week award goes to the thief who swiped a fire hydrant in Baxter. The thief didn't need to pry the hydrant off its stand. It had been broken off earlier when Brainerd Fire Chief Ray Shortridge backed into it.

40 years ago (1970)

The Brainerd City Council has voted to call for bids on four Civil Defense warning sirens and a radio alert system. A representative from a siren company displayed a map showing how one small and three large sirens could warn the entire city in event of a tornado.

60 years ago (1950)

Charles Halsted, Brainerd, DFL candidate for nomination for governor, denied that he would consider running for lieutenant governor on the DFL ticket. "I'm not interested in any office but the governorship," Halsted said this morning.

80 years ago (1930)

Today was a red letter day for Mr. and Mrs. Donald Murphy of Fir Street, who had triplets born at St. Joseph's hospital. The triplets were the first born at the hospital and the first delivered by Dr. R.A. Beise in his long career.

100 years ago (1910)

Through a typographical error the Dispatch said that the party the other night was to celebrate F.H. Gruenwald's 49th birthday. It should have read "his 40th." F.H. says he is growing old fast enough without any additional assistance.
