20 years ago (1990)

Only one of the usual five Greyhound buses into Brainerd was expected this morning, and agent Dale Sollid wasn't holding his breath for that one. A nationwide Greyhound strike went into effect this morning, stranding service between thousands of cities.

30 years ago (1980)

A frozen lake near Brainerd provided an emergency landing strip for a student pilot from Grand Forks, according to the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office. The woman wasn't hurt but a wing was damaged when she was forced to land on Grave Lake.

40 years ago (1970)

Rep. John Zwach announced that an REA loan of $555,000 has been granted to the Crow Wing Co-op Power and Light Co. of Brainerd. The loan will be used to finance 41 miles of distribution lines to serve 600 new customers.

60 years ago (1950)

There is no need of a possible closing of schools, churches or other institutions due to the prolonged national coal strike. A local survey indicated there is enough lump coal to last until spring, though stoker coal is just about gone, with no more to come.

80 years ago (1930)

Mushing his dog over a fast course, Robert Holden, 10, of 520 Laurel Street, and his dog, "Ted," came through to win the free-for-all and the junior singles to cop top honors in the dog derby today under auspices of the American Legion on South Broadway.

100 years ago (1910)

B.C. Heald, Jr. of Hubert, has been here three days looking after the milling of a car load of lumber at the Mahlum Lumber mill. The lumber will be used to erect an addition of a living room and 11 bedrooms to the Minnewawa Lodge summer resort.
