BAXTER SHOOTING

Road rage

Posted: Tuesday, March 02, 2004

BAXTER -- Road rage may be behind a shooting Tuesday morning in Baxter.

No one was hurt in the incident, but a single shot was fired at the Forestview Middle School construction site. The Baxter Police Department responded to a report of a shooting about 6 a.m.

"At this time it appears the incident stemmed from road rage," the Baxter Police Department reported, adding the shooting appeared to be a random act.

After traveling a similar route from south of Brainerd to the school construction site, the suspect -- a 43-year-old Brainerd man -- confronted the victim and fired a single shot from a handgun. The two people involved did not know each other, the Baxter Police Department reported.

The suspect then left the area. The victim notified law enforcement and provided a description of the shooter's vehicle.

At 6:06 a.m. Baxter officers located and stopped the suspect's vehicle on College Road in Baxter. The man was arrested at the scene and a handgun was recovered from the vehicle.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department and Brainerd Police Department assisted the Baxter Police Department.
