The Crow Wing County Enhanced 911 addressing system is close to completion.
E-911 will be fully operational in the Crosslake telephone exchange next week. Emily is expected to be operational soon.
All telephone exchanges in the county are expected to be online with E-911 by July.
The county board decided this past week to advertise for bids for materials and installation for street and house signs in townships. Roy Luukkonen, county auditor, expects the bids to be done by July 1.
Commissioners decided in 1997 to establish an addressing system for E-911 to help emergency vehicles find locations more quickly. Geo-Comm Inc., in St. Cloud, was hired to implement an address system. The contract with the consultants was anticipated to be completed within 18 months. Because of the scope of the project, an extension was granted.
The county highway department will assist townships in determining the number of road signs required. Luukkonen estimates the cost to be about $60 per sign installation. If the township decides to have the county install the road signs, they will be invoiced upon award of the bid in July. The county will provide the necessary funding for the signs. Street signs in the townships could cost between $114,000 to $200,000. Eventually, money will be reimbursed to the townships. The townships can levy in March and get funding in July 2001.
Townships will have to pay for housing signs in July 2001 based upon the actual cost. The county estimates installation costs of $20 per household. With 24,000 structures in the county, cost is estimated at $480,000. The house numbers will be required to be installed at the end of the resident's driveway.
The county sent letters to the townships this week to notify them of the impact of the budget expenditures for this year because of road signs and next year for housing sign costs.
Most property owners have been informed of respective address changes.
