Learn about water gardens at Deep Portage

HACKENSACK -- At 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Deep Portage Conservation Reserve, Daniel Dix will help participants plan a water garden for the yard.

Dix owns Superior Lake Home Services in Backus. He has created and installed water gardens throughout this area. He will explain the installation and maintenance of a water garden.

Reservations can be made by calling 682-2325.

"Water gardens are a lot easier to maintain than people realize and can be enjoyed year-round," Dix said.

He uses a rubber material that forms to fit the hollows and different sized rocks that line the base and shoreline of the water garden. He will teach participants the beauty and pitfalls of designing and installing a water garden.

There will also be a brief introduction to a variety of plants and fish that are vital to the health of the water garden.
