Taking a lead from the school system it oversees, the Brainerd School Board filled out a "report card" on itself. The result: The Board's performance rated "adequate" in most areas and split evenly between "excellent" and "needs improvement" in others.

Two Brainerd Daily Dispatch staff members were honored for their work over the weekend. Miss Arvy Hansen, regional editor, won two first places and Jim Wallace, sports editor, was honored for his coverage of wrestling by the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association.

Excitement reigned supreme at Melrose Tuesday as Brainerd and Melrose both winding up their regular season, met head-on in a collision of Region Six Titans and what transpired was more than the fans could take. Melrose with a whopping 32 to 12 edge from the free throw lane, scored a 88-68 decision.
60 years ago (1940)
A city-wide sanitary sewer project, envisioning construction of approximately 10 miles of sewer in Brainerd today was a step nearer realization following approval of a $258,120 WPA allotment at Washington.
80 years ago (1920)
The Elks have an option from owner F.A. Farrar, on the three lots at the Northeast corner of Sixth and Laurel Streets and the Lodge has under consideration the erection of a three-story brick building suited to their conveniences.
100 years ago (1900)
-- Staples was visited by a fire last Friday morning that destroyed several buildings, inflicting a loss of over $5,000.
