Standing on the diving board Britton Murrey was as white as a ghost.
Not because the freshman diver from Brainerd was nervous, but because he was sick - really sick.
Murrey battled through the flu and 31 other divers Thursday in the Class 2A state diving prelims at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center to advance to Saturday's finals.
He stands in 15th place out of 16 divers remaining in the finals. Murrey has 195.6 points after eight dives. Chaska's Alex Stern leads after eigth dives with 368.55 points.
Britton Murrey advanced to Saturday's final.
Teammate Keenan Goodrich just missed the first cut by five points. Divers are cut from 32 to 20 after five dives and then to the final 16 after eight dives.
Goodrich finished 24th overall with 121.1 points after five dives.
"Keenan had a great warmup," said Brainerd diving coach Owen Trout. "He was feeling good. He really just missed on everyone of his dives by just a little bit. When you start dropping points and getting behind it is hard to make them up."
Murrey will have three more dives Saturday. Trout believes he can make significant advances in the standings if he dives as well as he did during the Section 8-2A meet.
A good night sleep in his own bed may help.
"Britton didn't travel with the team," said Trout. "His parents brought him down today and they took him back home tonight. He dove fairly relaxed. Maybe because he was sick he didn't focus on anything else.
"Saturday he has a pretty good list of dives remaining. It's like a chess match. For Britton's 11 dives we wanted to give him a consistent difficulty level all the way through. We're thinking he can crack the top 12 with an outside shot of top 10 if he dives well."
