CROSSLAKE - Roy G. Schafer, 88, of Crosslake, died peacefully in his sleep early Thursday morning, Feb. 28, 2008. Services for Roy will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2008, at the Crosslake Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Anderson officiating. Friends are welcome to gather one hour prior to services at the church.
Roy was born on Aug. 9, 1919, in Altura, Minn., the son of Herman and Elsie (Bittner) Schafer. He grew up and attended school in the Altura area. After his schooling he helped on the family farm and also drove Rochester City bus at night. It was on his bus route he met and eventually married Lillian Lindquist on May 29, 1953, in Kasson, Minn. Roy and Lillian were able to share over 54 years of marriage together. After their marriage he went to work for Kepp Company installing underground cable in the upper Midwest. In his spare time he continued to work the farm near Utica, Minn. Roy was very proud to be a member of the 49ers Operating Engineers Union. After retiring Roy and Lillian moved to Crosslake and bought a home on the lake to spend the remainder of his years enjoying his favorite hobby, fishing. He was very active in Crosslake as president of the Game and Fish Club, serving as the president of the local food shelf, working on the Planning and Zoning Commission and serving on the Crosslake Lutheran Church council. Roy also took great pride in his garden, always saying, "If you can't eat it, don't plant it ."

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Elsie; daughter, Linda; son, Loren; grandchildren, Preston, Logan and Sierra Schafer; sisters, Beatrice McDougal, Evelyn Andring and Beulah Campa. Roy will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Lillian; children, Allen Schafer, of Crosslake, Marlin (Mary Ellen) Schafer, of Mosinee, Minn., and Lila Schafer, of Vadnais Heights, Minn.; grandchildren, Jessica (Nate) Drexler, Tessa Schafer and Preston Ryder; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, McKenzie and Abigail Drexler; sisters, Violet Balk and Inez (Alton) Loppnow; and brothers, Orrin and and Marvin (Jeanette) Schafer.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Chapel of Crosslake.
