Vox Pop
It's interesting how some parents wear their child's poor eating habits like a badge. Just because a child is not obese does not mean he or she is healthy. In Thursday's Dispatch there was an article headline stating, "Americans still don't get it when it comes to health." To guide a child to eat "a lot of junk food and pop" only makes the above headline painfully obvious.

Open Forum
The Democratic presidential candidate contest will be one of the main items of business for attendees at the DFL precinct caucuses on Tuesday, March 2. We are hoping for a very large turnout so our north country Democrats will have a meaningful say in the determination of a candidate to oppose President Bush and his policies.

The Becoming an Outdoors Woman program, designed for women interested in learning or expanding their outdoor skills, is offering 30 classes in 2004. New programs include a survival course, bowhunting education, kayaking classes and a wider range of options for those who want to hunt.

Panfish become the main attraction
Permanent fish houses have to be off the ice by midnight Feb. 29 here in the Brainerd area. But this doesn't mean that ice fishing is history for the year. The panfish bite is only going to get better.

New fishing regulations set
New fishing regulations this year will affect Lake Superior, Leech Lake Reservation, North and South Dakota border waters, Minnesota-Ontario border waters as well as 12 lakes throughout the state. New regulations are listed on page 5 of the fishing regulations booklet.

Warmer temperatures are moving my mindset from mud in the ditches back to the middle of the road. In spite of the snow a sense of spring is in the air. Squirrels are busy chasing each other and many birds are starting to sing spring songs.

Fishing report
The panfish bite has really picked up in recent days. Lakes such as North Long, Nisswa, Roy, Cullen, Sylvan, and Crow Wing all are producing fish. Look for crappies to be hitting glow jigs tipped with wax worms or rosy red minnows in 28 to 30 feet of water. The majority of sunfish coming off these lakes are hitting in 4 to 10 feet of water.
