ST. PAUL -- Staples-Motley's Cory Detloff became the first Cardinal to place in the Class 2A state wrestling tournament since Adam Johnson in 2003.
But it wasn't the place Detloff wanted Saturday as the senior was pinned at 5:35 in the third-place match by Brent Eidenschink of Detroit Lakes.
The match was scoreless after two periods. Eidenschink opened the final two minutes in the up position and finally tipped Detloff on his back with 25 seconds remaining.
"(Wrestling on the mat is) Eidenschink's strength," Cardinals coach Gordy Thompson said. "He does the leg in, power out. We thought if we could get the first takedown we would have a good chance of winning the match."
Eidenschink entered the state tournament ranked No. 1. Detloff was unranked.
"We had him right where we wanted him," Thompson said. "(Eidenschink's) a good wrestler. He's been down here before."
