Kelley, Royer each record 1,000 points

PINE RIVER -- The Pine River-Backus Tigers boys' basketball team clinched the Park Region Conference and Justin Kelley scored 1,001 points for his career in a 74-32 win over the Verndale Pirates Tuesday

Justin Kelley scored 18 points to put him over the barrier. Ross Kleiner added 17 and Landon Hamilton 10 for the Tigers who improved to 20-4 overall.

Kelley joins Vic Rinke a 1967 graduate of Backus, Dean Coffland a 1983 graduate of Backus, Scott Chitwood a 1985 graduate and Dennis Carlson a 1987 graduate of Pine River as the only 1000 point scorers in school history.

PEQUOT LAKES -- With his 14 points Tuesday, Pequot Lakes junior Matt Royer joins 1990 graduate Chad Misener and 1997 graduate Justin Dale as the only Pequot Lakes boys' basketball players to reach a 1,000 points in a career.

Along with Royers accomplishment, the Pequot Lakes Patriots defeated the Menahga Braves 73-46 in Park Region Conference action.

Dan Akerson led the Patriots with 17 points and eight rebounds. Cody Nelson added 10 points for the Patriots.

Royer also had five assists and three steals. Justin Biebighauser finished with eight points, four assists and two steals.

WADENA -- The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines boys' basketball team snapped a 18 game losing streak with a 54-45 win over Perham in non-conference action Tuesday.

Matt Schiller knocked down four three-pointers and led the Wolverines with his game high 28 points. Michael Grimme added nine points for W-DC.

DEER RIVER -- The Aitkin Gobblers boys' basketball team held of the Deer River Warriors 61-43 in a non-conference boys' basketball game Tuesday.

The Gobblers Ben Solien led the charge with 16 points followed close by Adam Holder with 13 points. Mike Bare finished with 12 points and five assists. Adam Spolarich helped out with 10 rebound and nine points.

" We played excellent defense tonight," Aitkin coach Greg Hills said, "They only scored 26 points in three quarters and could not get any of their shots off with our defense. We really played well."

LITTLE FALLS -- The Little Falls Flyers boys' basketball team improved to 11-2 in the Central Lakes Conference and 19-2 overall with a 73-56 victory over the Alexandria Cardinals Tuesday.

Nate Miller of Little Falls led all scorers with 25 points. Kendall Feia was also in double-figures with 11 for the Flyers.

PILLAGER -- The Henning Hornets outlasted the Pillager Huskies 73-72 in an overtime Park Region Conference boys' basketball game Tuesday.

Adam Brown scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Huskies. Lee Roberts contributed 19 points and five assists and Jeff Eastman chipped in with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

PELICAN RAPIDS -- The Staples-Motley Cardinals fell 59-54 against the Pelican Rapids Vikings in boys' basketball action Tuesday.

The Cardinals couldn't make up a 12 point halftime deficit.

"We didn't come ready to play," said Cardinal coach Lynn Peterson. "We tried to make a comeback, but couldn't dig ourselves out of the hole."

Dan Lund led the Cardinals with 17 points. Jeff Brever added 12 points and Adam Barnett scored 10.

Joe Johnson was to much for S-M as he six three-pointers, and scored a game high 30 points.

PIERZ -- Adam Tschida and Mark Kimman led the Pierz Pioneers to a 55-48 Central Minnesota Conference boys' basketball victory over Holdingford Monday.

Tschida tied his career high with 20 points and added eight rebounds. Kimman had 16 points and 16 boards. The win evened Pierz's records at 6-6 in the CMC and 11-11 overall.
