Brainerd's Andy Pickar of Minnesota State, Mankato, was champion at the North Regional at Minnesota State, Moorhead, on Sunday.
Pickar defeated defending national champion Nate Baker of Moorhead 5-2 in the finals. As a result Pickar qualified for the NCAA Division II national tournament March 9-10 at Kearney, Neb.
Pickar is ranked first in the nation at 165 pounds and has a 20-1 record.
CLC's Meyer honored
Central Lakes College women's basketball player Megan Meyer was named to the All-Minnesota Community College Conference and All-North Division second teams.
Meyer is a freshman from Little Falls.
Boosters will not meet Thursday
The Brainerd Sports Boosters Club will not meet Thursday out of respect for the funeral service of Warriors coach and sports booster Mark Embretson.
Embretson's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Brainerd. A reception and celebration of life follows the service.
Curling association conducts bonspiel
Brainerd Lakes Curling Association conducted its first bonspiel Saturday at Hallett Center in Crosby.
The tier one winners was the team captained by Jack Christofferson with second place going to the team captained Caren Bedard.
The tier two winner was the team captained by Travis Jackson with second place going to the team captained by Mike Williams.
More than 700 area curlers braved blizzard conditions to attend. Sixteen teams played in the double-elimination tournament.
Team awards will be presented at the annual dinner April 17.
Sophomores defeat Cloquet
Ben Gervais scored 28 points as the Brainerd Warriors defeated Cloquet 64-53 in sophomore boys' basketball Saturday.
Other leading scorers were Jon Wiese with 14 points, TJ Struss with seven and Dan Bendzick and Nick Boetcher each had five for Brainerd (21-2).
Boxing card scheduled Saturday at Wadena
WADENA - Wadena will host a Golden Gloves Boxing card at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the National Guard armory.
Twelve bouts are scheduled between boxers from Fergus Falls, Grand Forks, St. Cloud, Brainerd, Willmar and Detroit Lakes.
Wadena boxers scheduled to see action include DeWayne Steward, T.J. Steward, Brent Steward, Chris Steward, Travis and Trent Petro, Elliot Sandberg, Joe Collom, Chandler Green, Billy Fletcher, Kody Thompson and Stephanie Koljonen.
