DEERWOOD -- The bodies of a man and his daughter-in-law were found Wednesday at a rural Deerwood home following an apparent murder-suicide.
Crow Wing County Sheriff Eric Klang Thursday said the bodies of DuWayne Mooers, 80, and his daughter-in-law, Lisa Mooers, 40, were discovered about 1 p.m. Wednesday by Don Mooers, DuWayne's son and Lisa's husband, at Don and Lisa Mooers' residence on Beaver Creek Road, about a mile and-a-half north of Deerwood.
Klang said it appeared DuWayne Mooers shot Lisa Mooers. Lisa Mooers' body was found inside the house and DuWayne Mooers' body was found outside. There were no signs of a struggle. A handgun was recovered. Klang said it was uncertain how many shots were fired. Investigators believe the shooting happened earlier Wednesday, he said.
A suicide note was found but Klang declined to discuss the note's contents. What led up to the murder-suicide had yet to be determined, he said.
"It's too early to say what the motive was," said Klang. "It would be speculation at this juncture."

Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department deputies Wednesday blocked the entrance to the home of Don and Lisa Mooers. At the house, investigators found the bodies of Don Mooers' father, DuWayne Mooers, and Don Mooers' wife, Lisa Mooers. Authorities believe DuWayne Mooers killed Lisa Mooers and then himself. The bodies of DuWayne and Lisa Mooers were transported for autopsy by the Crow Wing County coroner's office.
Klang said his department had never been called to the residence in the past and, based on reports, there appeared to be no animosity between DuWayne and Lisa Mooers.
"It's kind of really surprising," he said.
Lisa and Don Mooers' residence -- a gabled, multi-story house -- is located down a long, winding driveway at the dead end of Beaver Creek Road. The driveway entrance to the home was secured by a sheriff's deputy Wednesday afternoon.
About 2:30 p.m. several grieving family members were escorted from the residence by the Rev. David Greaver, Crow Wing County chaplain.
About 4:30 p.m. the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agents arrived at the Mooers residence. The State Patrol and the Crosby Police Department assisted.
DuWayne Mooers and his wife, Elsie Mooers, operated Mooers Agate Lake Resort near Deerwood for about 60 years. Elsie Mooers died Jan. 23.
