BAXTER -- Elaine Marie Berns, 64, Baxter, who served more than 30 years as a special education teacher's aide at Baxter Elementary School, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at St. Joseph's Medical Center.
She was born April 1, 1936, in Denver to Carl and Beulah (Lewis) Nyborg Sr. She moved to Brainerd when she was 5. She was a graduate of Brainerd High School and Brainerd Community College. She also served as a teacher's aide at Lincoln Elementary School. She was a member of the Community Covenant Church and sang in the church choir. She married Charles Berns on June 25, 1988.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Lynn Franz, Brainerd; a son, Daniel Franz, Cottage Grove; two stepsons, Timothy Berns, Brainerd, and Francis Berns, Plano, Texas; a stepdaughter, Kathy Berns, Rochester; nine grandchildren; and a brother, Carl Nyborg Jr., Dayton, Wash.
Her parents and a sister, Lois Smith, died earlier.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Community Covenant Church with Pastor Jon Gehrls officiating. Burial will be in Baxter Cemetery.
Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home in Brainerd and an hour before services Wednesday at the church.
