Six is becoming an unlucky number for the Brainerd Warrior gymnastics team. They finished sixth at state for the fifth year in a row, scoring 141.7 points below their best. Julie Beasley won two individual medals and Angie Johnson one for the Warriors.
30 years ago (1980)
Three Brainerd Golden Glovers earned trips to the Upper Midwest Tournament with victories in the Region 4 tourney in Brainerd. Winning for coach Tom Herron's crew were Kyle Dean (147 pounds), Chris Kelm (156) and Jim Crawford (165).
40 years ago (1970)
Pfc. Jim Spangler, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Spangler, Brainerd, was awarded the Army Commendation medal for valor in Vietnam. Spangler braved enemy fire to help rescue a convoy from an enemy ambush, with complete disregard for his own safety.
60 years ago (1950)
Playing before a standing-room-only home crowd, the Brainerd Warriors banged out an easy 67-49 win over Wadena, to avenge their only loss of the season. The Warriors now stand at 21-1 for the season, while Wadena's record is 15-5.
80 years ago (1930)
Van's Caf met their Waterloo when the new Brainerd Electric Co. team downed them two games to one in the Straightaway bowling league. The victors rolled a huge 1011 in the third game; Carroll hit a nice 635 series and Block followed with 594.
100 years ago (1910)
W.A.M. Johnston returned from a business trip to St. Paul, Kansas City and Colorado Springs. At the latter place he saw Ed McKay, who is receiving treatment in the Sanitarium for tuberculosis. McKay has gained 17 pounds and is looking better.
