Snowmobile racers and spectators gathered in Garrison yesterday for the opening of the Fifth Annual Mille Lacs 300 Snowmobile Race on Mille Lacs lake. Racers will complete the third and final lap today on what has been billed as the worlds largest race track, a 100-mile circuit around the lake.

Boy Scouts from Troop 45, St. Francis Church, worked on duck nests that will be used at Boom Lake as a part of the Kiwanis-Lions area conservation project.
60 years ago (1948)
Fred Fleischa, 607 North Tenth Street, Brainerd, won the Northern Minnesota Checker Tournament at Hibbing, Feb. 21. There were 18 contestants entered in the tournament.
80 years ago (1928)
A crowded assembly room in the high school saw Brainerd High School representatives win the contests in oratory and dramatics, while the humorous award went to the Crosby-Ironton High School.
100 years ago (1908)
Merrill Wickhamn and J.H,. Dickinson were busy pulling up ice last week preparatory to running a meat market this coming summer. It will be a treat to be able to buy fresh meat in any quantity during the hot weather.
