ST. PAUL -- With the team competition having ended at the Class 2A state gymnastics meet, two Brainerd Warriors turned their attention to the individual portion of the state meet Saturday.
Freshman Kathleen Lorenz and sophomore Katie Perpich represented the Warriors as they vied for championships in three events and the all-around.
Lorenz placed 10th overall in the all-around with a school record 37.85 points, beating last year's state champion Jacenta Spandl of Moorhead.
Perpich also had a solid showing in the all-around competition, finishing in 26th place with a total score of 36.25.
"It was nuts there," Brainerd coach Dave Maras said. "In every event there were five to six girls over 9.7. It comes down to the little things, a bent leg, a pointed toe, or a step on a landing. It all comes down to how you perform.
"Katie and Kathleen were right on their games. They competed for themselves. There's a lot of courage in these ladies."
Lorenz was in a record-breaking mood Saturday, eclipsing the school balance beam record with a dazzling 9.7 and finishing in sixth place, her best finish of the day.
"To go 9.7 on the beam and get sixth place just goes to show the quality of the gymnasts," Maras said.
Lorenz placed in the top 20 on the uneven parallel bars and on the floor. She scored a 9.475 on her floor routine, good for an 18th-place finish. Lorenz also had a strong showing on the bars, finishing in 13th place with a score of 9.35.
To round out her stellar night, Lorenz scored a 9.3 on the vault.
Perpich also performed superbly for the Warriors. She finished 17th on the vault with a 9.375 and 14th on the bars with a 9.325.
Besides a fall on the beam, Perpich nailed a great routine but ended up 26th with a score of 8.425. She also had a great floor routine, racking up 9.175 points toward her all-around score.
"Katie had a great showing," Maras said. "That one mistake on the beam was the only mistake and the rest of her routine was as good as could be. Other than that one mistake, she was perfect."
Maras was happy with his gymnasts' performances and knows that as young as Lorenz and Perpich are, they will be forces to be reckoned with in the future.
"We basically have all but one kid coming back and that's a great feeling," Maras said. "We have an excellent coaching staff. Without them it'd be a lot different. They love the sport and the kids. With those two things, everything seems to be in place."
