Help make dreams come true: Become a mentor

Earlier this month, we witnessed the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, British Columbia. Since 1924, dreams have been coming true for talented athletes brave enough to put their best on the line and compete against world leaders in their competitive sports. Although they're not winning medals and awards, competing in the Olympics is similar to what Kinship kids have to face.

Each week we have youngsters referred to our program because it is felt that a caring adult will make a huge difference in their lives. Every one of these children takes the risk of exposing themselves, their dreams and their worries in hope that there will be an adult available to become their friend. Imagine their fear of not being good enough to be matched or their feelings of hopelessness when weeks, months and even years go by without them getting off the waiting list.

Last week we witnessed two "dreams come true." Two boys who had been on our waiting list for quite some time (one of them for over two years) were matched with adult friends. Situations like these are what keep us going! Our belief is that every one of the kids referred to our program has the right to be matched. Sometimes it takes awhile for that perfect partner to come along, but the good news is that they eventually do come along and all that waiting, nervousness and feelings of hopelessness are replaced with excitement, enthusiasm and feelings of joy.
