Prep baseball camps scheduled at Forestview

Former Brainerd Warriors Ray Austin, Tim Martin, Joel Lofstrom and Tony and Rob Veith will conduct pre-season pitching and hitting camps for high school baseball players in grades 9-12.

The camps begin Feb. 24 and will take place on six nights leading up to the start of the high school season.

Camps will be at Forestview Middle School in Baxter and there will be five instructors for both camps. The pitchers camp will run from 6 to 7:15 p.m. and the hitters camp from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m.

Cost is $100 per camp. Proceeds will benefit Brainerd Legion and VFW baseball programs.

Space remains for softball teams, umpires

Brainerd Parks and Recreation is accepting registrations for adult softball leagues.

Returning teams are encouraged to sign up before the Friday deadline to guarantee a spot in the league.

Openings remain in men's, women's, masters and co-recreation leagues. A $300 deposit is required when teams register. New teams may sign up beginning March 1.

Anyone interested in umpiring may call the parks and recreation office (218) 828-2320. An umpire clinic is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. April 7 in the Brainerd High School conference room.

Boxers lose at Fergus Falls

Tom Fanjoy of the Golden Lakes Boxing Club lost to Jesse Wanamaker of Fergus Falls in the main event at 150 pounds on a Golden Gloves Boxing card Saturday at Fergus Falls.

Zach Zontelli of GLBC lost to Matthew Koski of Fergus Falls at 145 pounds.

Fanjoy, Zach and Luke Zontelli, Kyle Matuszak and Nathan Scott are tentatively scheduled to compete on a card beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Clearwater American Legion.
