The American Red Cross is organizing an area blood drive Monday through Thursday at the Brainerd Armory.
Blood drive times are 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday. A blood drive is also scheduled 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Pequot Lakes School library.
Red Cross blood drive organizers said blood banks are low and new donors are needed. Eating iron-rich foods is recommended for blood donors. Donors with low hematocrit levels, or percentage of red blood cells in blood, may be unable to give blood.
Some of the best sources of iron include red meat, fish, poultry, liver, iron-fortified breakfast cereals, beans and peas, lentils, breads and cereals and dried fruit. And eating foods rich in vitamin C, oranges, broccoli, tomatoes, kiwi, strawberries, peppers, potatoes and cabbage, along with iron-rich foods helps increase the amount of iron absorbed.
Anyone who is at least 17, weighs at least 110 pounds and is considered to be in good health may be eligible to give blood.
