The Central Lakes College Music Department will present "A Winter(?) Concert" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Chalberg Theater on the Brainerd campus.
The Winter(?) Concert lineup features Bella Voce (Beautiful Voice), an a cappella vocal group specializing in sacred vocal music from the 16th through 20th centuries, the CLC Brass Ensemble and the CLC Jazz Band.
Steve Anderson, band director (and concert title creator), said, "Bella Voce comes to us from St. Cloud through one of its members, Hillary Vermillion. She is the vocal music instructor at CLC this year while Michelle Sakry-Winkelman is on sabbatical. Vocal excellence and interesting repertoire are hallmark of Bella Voce."
Bella Voce also includes Brenda Barrett, Gary Barrett, Jim Wiant, Lu Tax, Michelle Dettmann, Jon Christianson and David Scholz.
Ronnie Miller (left), Brainerd, and Isaac Armstrong and Dustin Hellen, both of Pine River, are among the saxophone players in the Central Lakes College Jazz Band that will present a concert Tuesday on the Brainerd campus.
The CLC Brass Ensemble will offer a menu of original brass ensemble compositions and adaptations from other sources. The menu includes a polka from "Hornsmoke," an opera by P.D.Q Bach, as well as a rollicking package of music from Gilbert and Sullivan's "Pirates of Penzance" arranged for the Canadian Brass.
Members of the CLC Brass Ensemble include: trumpets -- Mike Pontius of Baxter, Evan Frisk of Staples and Mark Munson of Brainerd; French horns -- Bonnie Groneberg and Becky Stadem, both of Baxter; trombones -- Jim Anderson and Robin Myers, both of Brainerd; tubas -- Bruce Kaiser of Backus, Dan Armstrong of Pine River and Steve Anderson of Merrifield.
The Jazz Band will feature a wide range of styles, from traditional swing to sharp-edged funky, said Anderson, noting, "We'll stir some smooth ballads into the mix."
One of the featured soloists is saxophonist Dustin Hellen from Pine River, a member of this year's Minnesota Music Educators All-State Jazz Band. He attends both Pine River-Backus High School and CLC.
Others in the CLC Jazz Band are saxophonists Isaac Armstrong of Pine River and Ronnie Miller and Nathan Berg, both of Brainerd; trumpeters Evan Frisk of Staples, Josiah Srock of Crosby, and Mark Munson of Brainerd; trombonists Steve Anderson of Merrifield and Chris Pagnac of Brainerd; pianist Morgan Cossette of Biwabik; guitarist Jason Blessing of Staples; bassist Sue Anderson of Brainerd; and drummers A.J. VanVickle of Pillager and Russell Behrens of Staples.
Admission is $3 per person, with children 12 and under and CLC students with ID admitted free. For more information, call the CLC Music Department at 855-8215.
