PINE RIVER -- Two square blocks were evacuated Tuesday afternoon in Pine River after a gas line broke at Grandma's Up North restaurant.
Classic Construction was tearing down the remains of Grandma's Up North, a small restaurant that a fire had gutted Jan. 28, said Pine River Police Chief Steve Abraham. The restaurant owners, Phillip and Julie Swenson, contacted NSP on Feb. 2 to have the gas line shut off, but through a misunderstanding the gas was still on and the line was cut during cleanup.
The two blocks next to the restaurant, mostly businesses, were evacuated and people were allowed to return to their businesses and homes at 3 p.m., said Abraham.
The Cass County Sheriff's Department received the gas line break call at 1:43 p.m. Also assisting at the scene were the Pine River Fire Department, North Ambulance Service, State Patrol and Excel Energy.
