BUCKMAN -- Fredrick "Fred" H. Block, 77, Buckman, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at Foley Nursing Home of Foley.
He was born May 6, 1922 in Genola to Henry and Magdelina (Sand) Block. He attended country school near Lastrup. From 1939-1943 he worked in the Civilian Conservation Crop as an assistant foreman. During this time, his group cut all the wood to run the camp and the last two years the group ran the telephone lines. In 1943, he purchased a farm near Hillman. He married Margaret "Peggy" B. Kapsner on Oct. 23, 1944 in St. Michael's Catholic Church of Buckman. In 1948, they moved west of Buckman and farmed until they retired in 1980. He also owned and operated Fred Block Construction. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Buckman.
Survivors include his wife; seven daughters, Betty Hayes, Holdingford, Shirley Dingmann, Foley, Karen Coppes, Little Falls, Blondie Gangl, Buckman, Jo Krof, Genola, Carol Luberts, Pierz, and Lois Thommes, Pierz; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Hilda Hoheisel, Lastrup, Doris Pella, Pierz, and Betty Krych, Pierz; and three brothers, Herb Block and Robert Block, both of Pierz, and Andrew Block, Lastrup.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church of Buckman with the Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call at Shelley-Virnig Funeral Chapel of Pierz from 4-9 p.m. today, with Christian Mothers praying the rosary at 7 p.m. and parish prayers at 8 p.m., and from 8-9:45 a.m. Tuesday.
