The Brainerd Kixters were happy to be near the top at the state dance team competition this past weekend at Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota. The team took third-place in the high kick event.
"Going into the event as defending state champions is an unbelievable pressure," said Coach Cindy Clough. "We hoped to win but our goal is to make it to the final round and then to medal. So we met our goal.
"We felt we did our best and put on a strong performance. Our afternoon qualifying round was a bit of a disappointment in our eyes, even though we placed third in the afternoon too. It was nerves, we were just too excited. We calmed down for the evening event and performed much cleaner, so we were pleased."
Dancing to Shake Like An Earthquake mix, the Brainerd Kixters executed a Kixter record of 87 high kicks in the routine.
The routine contained a section of Irish Riverdance style.
The Burnsville Blazettes took home the gold with six points; second-place, Eastview, nine; Brainerd, third, 15; fourth, Eden Prairie, 19.5; fifth, Wayzata, 22.5; and sixth, Apple Valley, 27.5.
Afternoon qualifying scores were as follows: first, Burnsville, six; second, Eastview, 12; third, Brainerd, 17.5; fourth, Apple Valley, 24; fifth, Wayzata, 24.5; and sixth, Eden Prarie, 26.
In Class A, the Aitkin dance team placed third in the high kick and the jazz funk competition. Crosby-Ironton took sixth-place in high kick.
