Hockey fan bus chartered

A fan bus to the Brainerd High School boys' hockey team's Section 7AA playoff game at Cloquet will leave 5 p.m. Thursday from the Brainerd Area Civic Center.

Anyone interested in riding the bus may call Carol Impola at 829-0378 by tonight. The cost is $10.

Boxing at Wadena Saturday

Golden Gloves Boxing is scheduled 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Wadena Armory.

Twelve bouts are scheduled, with boxers from Wadena, Fergus Falls, Willmar, Pine River, Detroit Lakes and Leech Lake competing.

The main event sends 169-pound Chris Holt, Detroit Lakes, a 1996 Upper Midwest champion, against Brent Nelson of Fergus Falls, a 1999 USA state champion.

Other featured matches include 195-pound Lee Roggenkamp of Wadena against Chad Andrews of Pine River and Romondo Papasodora, 158 pounds of Leech Lake, against 162-pound Dan Soukup of Pine River.

A female bout between Wadena's 165-pound Michele Avila and Sannee Love of Willmar also is scheduled.

A bout is in the planning stages for Nevis super heavyweight Nate Ott, who boxes for Wadena, at 235 pounds.

Other Wadena boxers on the card include Guy School, 155; Cody McManigle, 115; T.J. Steward, 145; DeWayne Steward, 135; Tommy Fuller, 74; and Nathan Kist, 139.

Nelson leads NSIC in three-point percent

Brainerd High School graduate Chad Nelson led the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in three-point percentage through Feb. 12.

Nelson, a senior point guard at Bemidji State, had made 25 of 52 (48 percent) from three-point ranged. He ranked 10th in scoring with a 15.1 average, 12th in field goal percentage (51), 12th in assists (2.71) and 10th in free-throw percentage (81).

Hemquist scores 11 in Northern victory

Brainerd High School graduate Sara Hemquist scored 11 points as Northern State University defeated Minnesota-Morris 88-59 in women's basketball Saturday.

Hemquist, a junior point guard, also grabbed five rebounds in 15 minutes. The Wolves improved to 16-8 overall and are in second place in the conference.

Northern ends the regular season at Concordia of St. Paul Friday and at Winona State Saturday.
