Boiler operation workshop planned at CLC Monday

Central Lakes College has re-scheduled a 30-hour boiler operation pre-licensing workshop for Monday through March 26 in the Business and Industry Center on the Brainerd campus.

This 30-hour course, which was suspended from its original date, will provide an opportunity to upgrade one's license.

It also is an opportunity to prepare for taking the boiler's license exam from special to chief. Instruction includes operation of low and high-pressure boilers, steam formulas and turbines.

The workshop will be from 6-9 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays in the Business and Industry Center. Fee is $329, including books, payable at registration. Instructor is Dave Horn.

Brainerd parks board to meet

The Brainerd Parks and Recreation Board will meet at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the conference room at Brainerd City Hall.

Doty's meetings in Fort Ripley and Deerwood rescheduled

State Rep. Al Doty, DFL-Royalton, will conduct public town hall meetings on Feb. 28 in Fort Ripley and Deerwood. The meetings have been rescheduled due to a death in the family.

The town hall meeting will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Feb. 28 at the Fort on Highway 371 in Fort Ripley. The town hall meeting in Deerwood will be conducted from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Deerwood American Legion.

Free Peace Corps Week program set at CLC

Jackie Extrand of Merrifield will present a free, 50-minute program on her Peace Corps experience at noon Wednesday at Central Lakes College in Brainerd.

Extrand was a volunteer with the Peace Corps in Uganda from 1994-97. Her presentation is sponsored by the CLC counseling department, where Extrand serves as a counselor.

The presentation, during Peace Corps Week, will include a nine-minute video on the history and background of the Peace Corps and information on where volunteers are stationed.

The program will take place in the Cube, C240, located upstairs from the north door entrance.

Brainerd Area Youth Chess Tournament planned

BAXTER - The Brainerd Area Youth Chess Tournament will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 28 at Forestview Middle School in Baxter.

Cost is $10 with pre-registration. Checks should be made payable to Brainerd School District Community Education.

Late registration is $15 at the door the day of the tournament from 9-9:30 a.m.

The tournament is for individuals and/or teams. There will be five rounds with four rounds assured with one round per hour. Clocks are started for unfinished games at 45 minutes. There will be Swiss system pairing.

Awards will be given to top individual players in divisions K-3, 4-6 and 7-12. There will be a traveling team trophy awarded to the overall first-place team. (Scores based on top four players from each K-12 team). There will be grade level team awards. (Scores based on top four players in each age group).

Bring chess sets if possible (tournament style preferred) as well as lunch and snacks, although snack concessions will be available. Wear comfortable clothing. The gym will not be available as there is an athletic tournament going on that day, but activity areas and rooms will be available outside of the tournament playing area.

Airport commission to meet Feb. 26

The Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport will meet at 1 p.m. on Feb. 26 for orientation of new airport commissioners.

Region Five meeting planned

The Region Five Development Commission meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Region Five office in Staples.

Funding applications available

United Way of Crow Wing and Southern Cass Counties currently has funding applications available to nonprofit agencies serving Crow Wing and southern Cass counties. Applications may be obtained from the local United Way office at 424 N.W. Third St. in Brainerd or by calling 829-2619. Applications are due by March 9 and funds will be allocated in July.
