Nurnberger reaches 1,000, S-M wins

STAPLES - Caleb Nurnberger needed six points to reach 1,000 for his Staples-Motley Cardinals career heading into Saturday's non-conference basketball game.

The senior scored 13 to surpass the milestone and help the Cardinals to a 67-39 victory.

He reached the mark four minutes into the contest. Derek Wolhowe added 12 and Jordan Peterson and Ben Duhn each scored nine for the Cardinals, who improve to 13-7.

The Cardinals defense held Barnesville to 29 percent shooting.

Nurnberger becomes the 12th Cardinal boy to reach 1,000 and the first since Jeff Brever in 2002.

BRAHAM - In what had been a one-sided rivalry over the past three seasons, the Pierz Pioneers finally go the upper hand and in the process snapped the Braham Bombers 55-game home win streak with a 68-59 non-conference victory Saturday.

Michael Weber paced Pierz with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Aric Welle scored 15 points and Breck Weber tallied 11.

Chad Lanners finished with nine points and 10 rebounds as the Pioneers improved to 12-9 overall.
