INTERNATIONAL FALLS - The Central Lakes College women's' basketball team needed a win over Rainy River Saturday to claim a spot in the state tournament.
Becky Skiba's 17 points ensured the Raiders that opportunity as they defeated the Voyageurs 69-51 and snapped a four-game losing streak.
"We finally started to hit our threes and got some well balanced scoring for the first time in awhile," Central Lakes coach Dennis Eastman said.
The victory completes what seemed to be an improbable turnaround after the Raiders began the season 1-6 before Eastman took over and finished the next 19 games with a 7-12 overall record and a 6-6 North Division record.
"We are happy about going to state," Eastman said. "With that four-game losing streak getting a win like this makes us feel better going into the tournament. We got ourselves into a must win situation and we came out and won with our backs against the wall. This is the best we have played in about the last two weeks and it is good to finish off the regular season with a game that shows us what we have to do to be successful with balanced scoring and some timely shooting."
Stacey Butler scored 12 and Brittany Miller added 11 for CLC.
