Douglas R. Thoms

Douglas R. Thoms, age 79, resident of Brainerd, formerly of Merrifield, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at Bethany Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd.

He was born Oct. 13, 1928, in Crosby, Minn. to Lauren and Bernice (Foote) Thoms. Douglas married Lorraine Weiss in 1997. He was a medic for the USAF from 1946 to 1971, he also worked for President Homes, John Shogren Septic Systems and in the wood business in Merrifield. Douglas loved to dance and play cards, hunt, fish and camp.

Survivors include: wife, Lorraine; sons, Kim and Tracy Thoms of Riverside, Calif., Arnold and Feve Thoms of Sartell, Minn., Zachary Thoms of Brainerd; daughters, Catherine and Gary Hix of Danville, Ill., Brenda and Bobby Bourgeois of New Iberia, La., Luanne and Ed Frazier of Vancouver, Wash; step sons, Brian and Lisa Weiss of Brainerd, Greg and Cheryl Weiss of Golden Valley, Minn.; step daughters, Bonnie and Ron Sanow of Brainerd, Karen Preston of Raleigh, N.C.; Marla Opatz of Brainerd, Minn., Laura and Tom Dilley of Brainerd, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 18 step grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorthy LaVictorie of Seattle, Wash., Jennie Foote-Thoms of Deerwood, Minn., Molly and Harlan Holvig of Tool, Texas, Bonnie and Lester Misner of Meriden, Wyo., Suzanne and Douglas Tscheu of Backus, Minn., Clarice and Dennis James of Des Moines, Wash.; brother, Billy and Tory Thoms of Spirit Lake, Idaho; uncle, Beryl and Shirley Foote of Crosby, Minn.; aunts, Lois Holton of Crosby and Francis Feierabend of Brainerd.

Preceded in death by his parents, sister Lorraine; brothers Lester, Loren and Donald; grandsons, Nathan and Kyle.

Services will be held 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at Bethany Good Samaritan Village Chapel. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and the hour before services at the Bethany Chapel on Wednesday. Military honors will be provided by the Brainerd American Legion Post 255.

Arrangements are with the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd.
