JERUSALEM (AP) -- An attacker detonated a bomb in a car near an Israeli roadblock outside Jerusalem on Monday, killing himself and an Israeli officer, officials said.
The explosion came after police stopped a suspicious vehicle near a checkpoint between Jerusalem and the Jordan River valley, said Benny Kashriel, mayor of a nearby Jewish settlement, Maaleh Adumim.
"The terrorist stepped outside and then the car exploded," he told Israel Radio. "He activated the mechanism and the car blew up," killing the bomber and a policeman, he said.
Kashriel said only one person was in the car and that the attacker might have been planning a bombing in Jerusalem.
