One of Brainerd's finest public servants will be ending his career with retirement -- Ray Shortridge will leave some large shoes to fill as chief of the Brainerd Fire Department. During his 25 years here he has been responsible for turning "just another fire department" into a tightly knit organization with sophisticated equipment and highly trained personnel.

The Brainerd Lions Club spent its meeting time last night discussing progress and problems involved with obtaining a new hockey arena here.

Miss Marion Scott, missionary to Sudan interior mission, Ethiopia, will speak at the Presbyterian Church. Marion is daughter of Mrs. A.H. Scott, 512 North Third St., Brainerd.
60 years ago (1942)
City officials in a council meeting Monday night inferred that war time demands relative to airports may necessitate the closing of the Brainerd airport. Such a situation would probably ground our locally owned and operated planes "for the duration."
80 years ago (1922)
Plans are being worked out for a modern cafe, size 60 by 60, two stories, and basement to be built at Breezy Point as soon as spring opens.
100 years ago
This afternoon little 2-year-old Cyril F. Valientyne entertained about 16 of his little friends on the event of his birthday. The little folks had a delightful time.
