Firefighters respond
The Brainerd Fire Department responded to a possible rescue call at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday on the Gull River on Gull River Road, near Gull Dam Road. Firefighters determined the call to be a false alarm.
Laughton remains in critical condition
Austin Laughton, 18, Brainerd, who was injured Thursday in a single-vehicle rollover crash, remained in critical condition Sunday at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale.

Loony Nisswa draws crowd for jubilee
People crowded the streets and stores of Nisswa Saturday for the 37th annual Nisswa Jubilee. This year's theme of Loony in Nisswa had dual interpretations of either Looney Toons or the Minnesota state bird. The cartoon and aviary snow sculptures were prevalent.

FEBRUARY 16 - 80 years ago (1929) - Construction of Brainerd's new high school building continues with all possible speed, with indications that bricklaying will begin by April 1. Practically the whole basement is completed and the boiler room will be complete in two weeks.

Pine River-Backus Elementary School fire
Pine River firefighters pulled open a garage door on the wood chip storage building outside of Pine River-Backus Elementary School, releasing smoke. Firefighters responded to report of a boiler/wood chip fire around 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Firefighters entered the building at Door No. 30 on the east side of the building to gain access to the elementary boiler room. The amount of damage wasn't immediately known Monday night. Fire call at Breezy Point Resort
Pequot Lakes firefighters were called to Breezy Point Resort at 3:45 p.m. Monday after smoke was reported in the resort's laundry building. The smoke was the result of lint catching fire in a dryer, Fire Chief Tom Nelson said. There was minor damage to the building's siding, a wall and a deck. No one was injured in the fire. A 24-year-old Baxter man was seriously injured after falling through a window at the former Tropical Nites bar in downtown Brainerd.

It is with sadness that we have lost such a down to earth and wise contributor to the Dispatch Open Form in the untimely passing of John Holley from Ironton. He always made me think and gave realistic opinions about the political happenings in our state and our United States. I so looked forward to his wise words and loved the intelligent way he could answer to the liberal left writings of some other contributors to this column. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
