In 1988, with the help of Ingrid Anderson, Brainerd became a sister city to Leksand, Sweden. Born in this city, Ingrid knew how much our two cities had in common and thus through paperwork, Brainerd became a sister city to Leksand. In past, Brainerd has had the honor of hosting formal educators, doctors, social workers, musicians, as well as political representatives from this city, whom have brought several gifts to our city. Brainerd has yet to officially exchange a formal visit to Leksand.
The Brainerd Dispatch has run numerous ads outlining an exclusive tour scheduled for this coming June, including highlights of Norway and Sweden, featuring a special four-day visit to our sister city - Leksand. The deadline for joining this tour is at hand, with initial deposits due this Friday, Feb. 23. While this may seem early, final commitments are necessary to secure the benefits of group discounts with airline and all the land tour arrangements. Many details come in to play with such an international excursion. I do hope that those considering being a part of this history-making event, would make their reservations by this Friday the 23rd. I plan on being a part of this tour, as I feel it is long overdue for a city representative to return a visit to our sister city. Minna and I will thoroughly enjoy traveling with others from our Brainerd area, sharing the sights and sounds of this fabulous trip together.
JAMES WALLIN is mayor of Brainerd and former Brainerd City Council member.
