Brainerd coach Chuck Whalen has been named to the Edina all-century boys' high school hockey team.
Whalen was a two-time All-Lake Conference selection as a goaltender. He led the Hornets to the 1967 state tournament with a .913 goals-against average, giving up just 21 goals in 23 games. Whalen posted a then-school record 12 shutouts in 23 games.
As a senior he helped Edina to a 22-0-1 record preceding the state tournament. The only blemish to an undefeated, untied record was a 0-0 shutout tie against Bloomington.
Biebighauser Ms. Basketball candidate
' Brianna Biebighauser of Pequot Lakes is one of 30 seniors who are candidates for the Ms. Basketball Award.
Five finalists will be selected during the girls' basketball state tournament. The winner will be announced April 30.
Registration for YMCA
sports leagues under way
The Brainerd Family YMCA is accepting registrations for students interested in participating in its winter sports league.
Floor hockey is open to youths in grades K-3 and basketball is open to youths in grades 4-6. Both leagues start Saturday, March 4, and will continue on Saturdays through April 15.

Stefan wins at Boy River
BOY RIVER -- Dave Stefan of Remer raced his Arctic Cat Z 440 to victory in the Semi-Pro 440-Liquid final at the Central Minnesota Cross Country Racing event last weekend. He also placed third in the 440-Fan final.
Sara Johnson of Aitkin placed second on her Polaris XCR 440 in the Pro Women's final. Rhett Johnson of Remer placed third in the 500 Pro final on his Polaris XC 500.
The next race on the circuit is at Hill City on Sunday.
