The Brainerd 14-U-A team finished second in the Golden Spike Hockey Challenge at Proctor Feb. 9-10.
In the opening round, Brainerd defeated Armstrong/Cooper 8-1 to advance to the winners' side of the tournament bracket. Goals were scored by Brooklyn Motschenbacher (2); Lizzy Desrocher (2), with assists from Sarah Sorensen and Amber Pahl; Sorensen (2), with assists from Desrocher; Brooke Swanson, with an assist from Amber Pahl; and Kierra Howard, with an assist from Sorensen.
In the semifinals, Brainerd beat Sauk Rapids 4-1 to advance to the championship game. Goals were by Desrocher (2), with Zoe Wolhart assisting on the second goal; Pahl, with an assist from Desrocher; and Emily Doss, with an assist from Pahl.
The championship game was won by Thunder Bay 2-1. Brainerd outshot Thunder Bay 30-12. Wolhart scored the only Brainerd goal with an assist from Desrocher.
Brooke Serfling was in goal for all three wins.
The team is coached by Todd Sorensen and Bob Joyce.
