In the paper today (Wednesday) I noticed a letter stating Vox Pop was a terrible thing to put in a newspaper. One of the comments by the writer from Deerwood was that (reporters) "identify sources whenever feasible." I partly agree with that statement. Except when you have a complaint against a landlord keeping his property up and you list your name you can be sure you will in some way suffer. If you have a complaint against a company or a local political person or party you may speak out more if your name is kept confidential.
I have worked in offices that had suggestion boxes and clearly stated do not put your name on your suggestion so they did not know who said what. Vox Pop gives these people that otherwise might not have the nerve to speak out the chance to do so. Please, try not to be narrow-minded as you may not have had the problems that the person writing has had.
Seatbelt use saves lives
Seatbelt use should be mandatory and failure to use them cause for fine. Failure to buckle up is not just an individual motorist's choice, but contributes to the 44,000 people killed each year on US highways. When people use seatbelts they have a far better chance to survive a crash.
Laws of government in this regard are passed to protect us all. We do not make it the motorists' choice to run red lights, ignore stop signs, drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or drive 80 m.p.h. any time they want to. Those who choose not to obey a seatbelt law with teeth in it will be ticketed. A few $50 fines will encourage changed behaviors. Result: fewer deaths and serious injuries.
Cal Thomas and Social Security
So much of interest to write about and only 300 words. Cal lying about the demise of Social Security. The model he is using uses a 1.6 percent annual growth in productivity. A 2 percent rate would maintain at the present level for the foreseeable future for probably a decade. The rate has been 3 percent. Medicare will be a problem only if the cost of health care cannot be contained. However big business will force a single payer system on us as they need the subsidy to compete with other countries that all ready have one.
I think that I have figured out the plan for public schools. Those that don't meet the goals set by the state get their funding cut and their students qualify for vouchers to attend private schools. The goals get raised the funds get cut again until there are no students. No public schools only for-profit schools which are not accountable to the state. Got rid of that pesky public school system just like the state hospital system. We don't need an educated population. We just need cannon fodder. Get those Vox Pops in before those conservatives get that shut down too.
Vox Pop is the publisher's choice
Even though I agree with the previous writer who so ably pointed out that "Vox Pop" is an unethical use of newspaper space, I feel compelled to disagree with his premise that the Brainerd Dispatch should no longer publish those contributions. After all, the publisher of the Dispatch is its CEO; if he feels that it is in the best interest of the paper to continue to be unethical, that is his right, and I will defend it. That is the American way, isn't it?
