20 years ago (1983)

The Brainerd School Board laid off 34 teachers and terminated four school programs last night in one of the hardest hitting budget cutbacks in the school district history.

30 years ago (1973)

Geneva Partridge, the first woman to enlist in the Army Reserve here, doesn't mind setting a precedent. Jeannie spent two years in the Women's Army Corps (WAC). She will be a personnel specialist in the office.

40 years ago (1963)

Free-throw accuracy, an art the Central Six Conference Champion Washington High School Warriors had exhibited rarely in moving to 12 wins in their first 15 games, came to the fore here Friday as Coach Fred Kellett's quint locked up his 11th such title in 15 seasons.

60 years ago (1943)

The Northern Pacific Railroad shops in Brainerd lead the four main shops of the Northern Pacific System in safety during 1942. This is the third successive year that the Brainerd shops have ranked No. 1.

80 years ago (1923)

Today is payday at the Northwest Paper Co., a payroll of between eight and ten thousand dollars being distributed.

100 years ago (1903)

"Whose voice did he like best, yours or mine?" asked Miss Kreech.

"I'm not quite sure," replied Miss Bird.

"His remarks were a bit ambiguous."

"Why, what did he say?"

"He said he liked my voice, but yours was better still."
