UTICA (AP) -- The driver of a car involved in a crash with a school bus Sunday suffered a heart attack, authorities said Thursday.
The driver, Donald Earl Mercer of Chatfield, also was legally intoxicated. Mercer, 63, and three others in the car were killed in the crash. Twelve people were injured on the school bus, which was taking people from St. Charles to ice skate in Winona.
The accident happened about 5:15 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Winona County Road 33 and U.S. Highway 14 near Utica, in southeastern Minnesota.
According to state tests, Mercer had a blood alcohol concentration of .15, above the legal limit of .10, the Minnesota State Patrol said.
Separately, Winona County coroner Lyle Torgeson said Mercer suffered a heart attack.
